10:10 – 10:55 Presentation
Making English Instruction Culturally Relevant and Engaging for Arabic-Speaking Students
Christina Andrade (University of San Diego, English Language Academy)
This presentation will share one English language instructor’s trials and triumphs of teaching Arabic-speaking students in the U.S. Four easily adaptable activities aimed at engaging Arab-speaking students will be shared. Activities created are based on current research into the culture and learning preferences of Arabic-speakers.

College Education as Seen Through the Eyes of an Iraqi Student
Haytham Boles (International House, El Cajon)
This presentation continues the San Diego Chapter’s Workshop theme of teaching English to Arabic-speaking students. The presenter, formerly an Iraqi university student, will be relating his learning experience in Iraq for the benefit of American ESL instructors.

Right to Left: Examining Writing Challenges for Arabic-Speaking Students
Sonja Lovelace (University of Southern California, Language Academy)
Marisa Garcia-Crocker (University of Southern California, Language Academy)
Native Arabic speakers learning English often develop oral fluency but encounter difficulties in writing that differ from those of other language groups. This workshop examines challenges they face in spelling, note-taking, and organization, shares current research. Participants analyze samples and brainstorm strategies to help these learners improve their writing skills.
