Workshop Description:
The presenters will explain relevant aspects of the Arabic language and culture that make teaching Middle-Eastern students a challenge for many American ESL teachers. The cultural background of the students significantly affects their learning style and classroom behavior. The presenters will explore such cultural dynamics and teacher/student relationships, attitudes toward reading and writing, and saving face in the context of formal assessment. Participants will receive a handout with practical examples, explanations, and simple exercises to enhance understanding.
Safineh Thamassebi (UC Irvine Extension) will present on the cultural characteristics and learning styles of Middle-Eastern students.
Bill Brechtel (UC Irvine Extension) will present on the linguistic challenges of Middle-Eastern students while explaining the differences between Arabic and English.
Teacher-Student Panel Discussion will follow the presentation
